Our Calling...

~Kim Fitzsimmons

We love are calling, because we were called to be firefighters!
We are “on the move, hands on, adrenaline loving, strong, ready to help at the drop of tones” kind of people.
And we shout out to the world:

“When you are having the worse day of your life – we are here to be the first one to help.
When you’re hurt, or scared, when the smoke is too thick to breathe,
when it hurts too much to move, or you’re afraid you’re about to lose someone you love,
we are here to be that smooth line between you and the chaos.
We are the Fire Service – that’s our calling.”

We even go above and beyond for the people we serve.  There are stories every week how a fire department stepped up and finished mowing a lawn, or cleaned the gutters, or changed tires, or even baked the rest of the cookies that were needed for a fund raiser.

Strong work, way to go!  That’s who we are, it’s what we do for those that we serve.
Always asking, before we leave, “What else can we do for you?”
And, just paying enough attention to notice what needs to get done – trying to keep that smooth line between the people we serve and chaos.

We are here for the public, and for the public we save animals, we save property, and we save lives.

But, it’s with deep sadness that we’re losing our own brotherhood, our family… losing it one firefighter at a time.
And every time one of our own takes his or her life the very core of our brotherhood is shaken.

We then start asking, “Why didn’t they say something??  Why didn’t they reach out?”  As the hurt sinks deeper, we whisper to ourselves, “We were here to help, that’s what we do.  We’re firefighters and we’re family…”

It’s time… it’s time to change those questions and thoughts and start following our calling.
We can’t wait and sit back for one of our own that’s hurting to reach out.
Because they are a firefighter… they believe they’re a helper.  Which means unfortunately most of them will never ask for help.

It’s time to go above and beyond with our own brothers and sisters.  It’s time that we clap for each other!  When one of us reaches a great achievement on the crew, within the firehouse, within the fire service, or in our personal life – family should always be the first to recognize and support, to stand up and clap.

It’s time that we constantly ask each other, “Do you need help with anything this week?”
By doing so, we could be that smooth line our brother or sister needs to hold the chaos back.
It’s time we shout out to our brotherhood:

“When you, our own brother or sister, are having a bad day – we’re here to be the first to help.
When you’re hurt, or scared, when the smoke is thick – we are still beside you.
W
hen it hurts too much to move, or you’re afraid you’re about to lose someone you love –
we are here to be that smooth line between you and the chaos.
And when you reach goals and achievements, we will stand proud and clap for you
because we’re your brothers, and your sisters, – it’s our calling.”

It’s time! It’s time to clap - it’s time to ask - it’s time to notice - it’s time to be that smooth line for each other - it’s time to save our brotherhood, our family - It’s time to honor your calling!
